Stephen Hawking

Stephen William Hawking, a British scientist and author was born in Oxford on 8th January 1942. During the Second World War, his parents lived in north London but Oxford was considered to be a safer location for babies. His family moved from north London to St Alban's when he was 8. Stephen attended St Albans School at age eleven, then University College in Oxford, the old college of his father. Stephen chose Mathematics even though his father preferred medicine. University College did not offer Mathematics, so Stephen chose Physics. He was awarded first-class honors in Natural Science after three years of not much effort.

 A Brief History of Time

Stephen Hawking’s book is a landmark in science writing. It explores profound questions such as: how did the universe start and what made it possible? Does time flow forward always? Does the universe have boundaries or is it unending? Exist in other dimensions of space? What will happen at the end?
A Brief History of Time, written in a language that we can all understand, takes us into exotic worlds of quarks and black holes, of antimatter, "arrows of Time," of the Big Bang, and an even bigger God, where the possibilities are amazing and unexpected. Stephen Hawking's images and imagination are exciting, bringing us closer to the secrets of the universe.

In A Brief History of Time, Hawking writes in non-technical terms about the structure, origin, development, and eventual fate of the Universe, which is the object of study of astronomy and modern physics. He talks about basic concepts like space and time, the basic building blocks that make up the Universe (such as quarks), and the fundamental forces that govern it (such as gravity). He writes about cosmological phenomena such as the Big Bang and black holes. He discusses two major theories, general relativity, and quantum mechanics, that modern scientists use to describe the Universe. Finally, he talks about the search for a unifying theory that describes everything in the Universe in a coherent manner.
