Description

William Faulkner described it as the greatest novel ever written. Fyodor Dostoevsky's Anna Karenina is described as a 'flawless novel'. It tells the story of the love affair that ended in tragedy between the rebellious and sensual Anna and the handsome officer Count Vronsky. Anna's passionless marriage is rejected and she must deal with the hypocrisy of society. The seven main characters of the novel create an imbalance in the rich and vast canvas of nineteenth-century Russia. They play out the contrasts between city and countryside life, and the many variations of love and family happiness.

Anna Karenina By Leo Tolstoy -ebook

Anna Karenina first appeared serially in The Russian Messenger over a period of five years, before being published in two volumes in 1878. Tolstoy’s second novel was important in cementing Tolstoy’s role as the leading Russian author of that era. It is believed that Tolstoy drew on his own upbringing as an aristocrat to create the setting for his novel. The character of Konstantin Levin, based on the author's own struggles with religion and his own experiences in life, was also influenced by his own experience.
